The enemy’s Decay Flame was fundamentally opposed to it, and the resulting pain was considerable.

The Vermilion Bird pinned Hawa’s neck beneath one foot and planted the other against the center of its torso.
Hawa stretched its legs out long and attempted to claw at the Vermilion Bird’s body, but the angle was poor.
When the Vermilion Bird leaned as far as possible toward Hawa’s head, Hawa’s talons could do no more than barely rake down its side.

Eventually, Hawa changed its method of attack.
This time, it twisted its head hard enough to risk breaking its own neck and bit down on the Vermilion Bird’s ankle.

It truly worked.
When the Decay Flame surging around Hawa’s mouth poured over the wound caught in its beak, the Vermilion Bird’s mouth opened involuntarily.
The beautifully colored flames that had been flowing over its leg were soon overwhelmed by the black fire and vanished.
All that remained there now was a single stick-like limb, blackened as though layer upon layer of ash had been painted over it.

But the instant Hawa attempted to bite down and tear that stick away, the Vermilion Bird roared and…
