Without warning, a dry wind brushed across my cheek.
It was a familiar scene from my memories.
Before an endless wasteland, the girl’s eyes stared resolutely into the far distance.
Though I wasn’t sure that was truly the right way to describe it.
Because she was ‘blind.’
Her closed eyelids showed no sign of ever opening.
Long ago, one of the dark priests had ripped out her eyes. She had told me that afterward, she had been unable to escape her nightmares for months.
It was understandable.
She had been born as a cherished jewel of the Imperial Family, and at her age, she had probably experienced almost no physical suffering throughout her entire life.
What must it have felt like to have her eyes gouged out without so much as anesthesia?
And yet the girl had once again planted her feet upon the earth.
Without the slightest tremor, she simply directed that intangible gaze, whose end no one could know, straight ahead.
One day, my curiosity got the better of me, and I asked her.
“What are you looking at?”
