I tried taking a deep breath as I looked at the bastard who had brazenly confessed to the crime—without showing even the slightest hint of remorse.
I inhaled deeply enough to straighten my back, ribs, and spine, and when I exhaled, I stretched the breath out shallow and long until it came out with a soft hiss.
“Fuck. Seriously, not one damn thing goes the way I want.”
But what came out at the end of that long breath wasn’t the muttering of a rational mind that had regained its composure.
It was the opening declaration of rage after even my final restraint had finally snapped.

Truthfully, I had known that bastard wouldn’t meekly let herself die.
After all, she was the tenacious monster who had survived in Hell for a full three hundred years with the weakest body imaginable.
And she hadn’t merely endured. She had slowly built up strength until she seized the position of second-in-command.
There was no way a hastily made contract could have taken care of everything.

So I didn’t feel any fresh sense of betrayal from being stabbed in the back like this.
Even watching her desperately hunt for weaknesses and bite into them inspired less contempt than a weary, Yeah, I figured you’d do that.
