When the game first began, the player was randomly assigned a role.
Among those roles, Medical Officer had the lowest probability of assignment and the highest difficulty.
Unlike the others, it required frequent involvement with Creatures.
The slightest misstep led straight to a bad ending in which the Medical Officer became a Creature.
And that was not all.
Here, the Medical Officer occupied a position despised by the Prison Guards.
Their reason for looking down on the Medical Officer was simple.
Weakness.
To face vicious Creatures, the Prison Guards had undergone intense ideological conditioning and highly demanding special training.
Only those who survived that training could be assigned here. They therefore took tremendous pride in themselves and possessed equally tremendous hostility toward Creatures.
The Medical Officer had received no training and was weak, yet held a position devoted to treating the Creatures. The Prison Guards could not help finding the role offensive.
Throughout my time playing the Medical Officer in TCX, the Prison Guards had harassed me relentlessly.
