Mephistopheles shuddered at the sensation of every last corner of the soul being read, yet did not cast out the mind that had been forcibly dragged inside.
[I-I’m not going to die…….]
It was impossible to know exactly what Gretchen had done, or what had been discovered, during that brief moment when the soul had been thrown out.
One thing, however, was certain.
Ever since then, Gretchen’s attitude had become even colder and so impenetrably firm that not even a needle could be driven through it.

At this rate, death would truly come.
There really would be no surviving it.
Wrapped in that terror, Mephistopheles resorted to the final measure.

It was to expose every last one of those wretched, utterly miserable memories.
Because this merely took advantage of a natural flow, it wouldn’t violate the contract either.
The souls happened to touch.
The souls happened to be deeply intertwined.
The memories within the soul happened to have been left open.
Information contained within one soul was merely flowing across to another.
How could that possibly count as a breach of contract?
[Pity me. Please, pity me.]
And if that happened to stir compassion within some hopelessly softhearted person…
Well, that could hardly be blamed on anyone.
It would simply be the result of coincidence.

May even Gretchen be granted that cheap sympathy that would be offered to a stone by the roadside.
