The reward for defeating the elevator mirror ghost at rock-paper-scissors was a single chance at questions and answers.
Needless to say, the truth a Ghost Story revealed was not always good.
It could be something I wouldn’t like.
Or something completely useless.
It could be either one.
For example, if I wrote down a question asking when humanity would go extinct, it might answer something like, “Long after you die.”
‘That would still be the truth.’
Which meant that if I asked, “What’s the method for getting back to where I originally lived?” it might reply with nothing but some absurdly extreme, fragmentary word.
Rather than risk that, it was better to find out whether the method I was already aiming for would really send me back to my original world for certain.

That answer, the one that would tell me the truth no matter what, appeared on the glass so slowly it made my insides burn.
