The people commonly known as “Black Cloak enthusiasts” regarded one another as little more than members of the same club, but in truth, they had been cultivating a much more tightly knit association.
Upon first joining, a newcomer went through a brief interview and completed a written contract. Members could rise to a higher class based on the time they spent participating and the results they produced. And the activities in question were, for the most part, volunteer work.
“What, do you think I came here to do that sort of thing?”
Most new members reacted this way at first. Those who dared covet the work of a Monster—now a divine being—were generally very wealthy, extremely powerful, or firmly ensconced in worlds of their own.
But it was only a matter of time before that attitude changed.
“That concludes your activities for this week. You’ve filled your entire quota.”
“Why are you stopping me when I’m saying I want to do more? It’s not as though I’m doing anything wrong—I’m trying to do something good.”
“The other members have to be allowed to participate for at least the guaranteed amount as well. If you do any more, there will be less work left for them. We ask for your understanding.”
